Recreation with Nutrition (RENU) Program for children in the northern province of Ilankai

Date: 04/06/2017

We are very happy to announce the inauguration of the Recreation with Nutrition (RENU) Sports program for Children in Northeast, Sri Lanka, sponsored by New Jersey Tamils in partnership with Ilankai Tamil Sangam (ITS). About 400 children from Killinotchchi and Mullaitivu area are expected to participate in the program. Center for Child Development, and Kaveri Kala Mantram Killinotchchi  are the RENU program implementation partners in Sri Lanka.

RENU program provides the children in the impoverished areas in the Northern province an opportunity to play recreational sports in a tournament atmosphere with access to nutritious food. Children take part in this program irrespective of their athletic ability to play the sport. In addition they will be served nutritious meals (food items prepared with whole grains, and milk) during practices and matches.

There will be a Soccer tournament for the Boys and Netball tournament for the Girls. Children will have a few weeks of practice sessions, then play the Round Robin phase, followed by the final knockout phase of the tournament. The following championship trophies will be awarded to the winning teams in memory of the two professional community activists who passed away recently in New Jersey.

Dr. Ram Kumarasamy Memorial Championship Trophy  (Girls Netball Tournament)

Dr. Suthan Suthersan Memorial Championship Trophy (Boys Soccer Tournament)

We are planning to provide each child with sports shoes, and a bag of toiletries.

If you would like to sponsor these items for one or more children, please contact Sanagam officials for further details.
